Meet Earl. See what he has to say about his Back Alley journey!

1. What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?

I joined almost 4 years ago, as my 50th birthday was approaching. Coming up on that milestone gave me a “now or never” incentive to get in shape and make some positive changes. My buddy Tim Shaughnessy found Back Alley and we joined at the same time. I’m a little bit codependent so having someone to do the workouts with made it a lot easier. We started in a one month boot camp, three times a week which almost killed me. I remember Melissa saying your goal should be to do 4 or 5 classes a week and my thought was that’ll kill me…thankfully, now I can kind of handle that schedule.

2. What was your first impression? How has that changed?

My first impression was that the owners and coaches took a lot of time to encourage you and to work with you on your form and the function of the workouts. Also. my impression was that the gym was a fun place to be and the environment was positive and friendly. That impression has definitely held.

3. What was your first “bright spot”?

I have lots of room for improvement but truly have had many bright spots….one of the first bright spots was moving from jumping and banded pullups to kipping and strict pullups. Also actually being able to climb the rope was big for me!

4. What are you working on now?

Everything… For some stupid reason I love getting a gold star for a new PR (personal record)! One thing I’d really like to finally get is double unders; however, I must admit I’m not working hard enough on this goal….maybe it’s because you don’t get gold stars for double unders?

5. What’s your favorite Back Alley memory?

I’ve had lots of good memories…but my favorite memories are working with coaches who are super people and who care about your workouts and progress. I also really enjoy the people I work out with.
